Stitching Games, January

January clue interpreted by K.B.

You might think that because I created the clues, I would know exactly how each might apply to my canvas. Well, I don't. Take the current clue--Shape Up! I couldn't get that song from Grease out of my head: (John Travolta) I better shape up / (Olivia Newton-John) Because I need a man. . . . But I couldn't figure out how to incorporate pompadours, duck tails, high pony tails, black leather jackets, poodle skirts, bobby socks, or saddle shoes on this canvas. So stuck with that song running through my head, I decided to go with the more obvious thing: shapes. Gosh, but my canvas has lots of shapes! Up: I'll tackle the rose area with the diamond shapes that is above the stage. Excellent! A plan!

So I pull out my pink and red threads to see if I can find that rose color. NO. So my canvas goes back to lounging around waiting on me to go thread shopping.

Three or four days go by and POW! it hits me. I have a poodle wearing a tutu, and a tutu is a skirt! (Poodle skirt = poodle's skirt) Phew. Maybe, having delivered its subliminal message, that song will get out of my head. (I should be so lucky.)

Judy, that makes me wish I still worked for someone else! Half the time, I'm working in my sandals and pjs. But if I still had my corporate job, I'd grab those up in a heartbeat!

I agree, but we didn't wear them in our school.  We wore white bucks with colored socks!!

Now, saddle shoes are a different story. Even when they weren't "back," I some. Heck, I'd wear them today if I found a pair. Don't know why, but I really love the look of a saddle shoe.

Judy, poodle skirts were retro and being used in Halloween costumes when I was of an age to wear them. :) But my mother did have one in a chest of stuff that I remember seeing a time or two. And hers was probably made by my grandmother.

Great job, Karen.  You never had a poodle skirt?  I didn't but my Mom did and I wanted it!  I was so jealous.  They were expensive!

I've often wondered how the poodle skirt became popular. They're cute and all, but ...
